Description
If you search for spreader bars you’ll quickly find that a fully fabricated, certified spreader bar will cost $1,000+ (or more). And it makes a lot of sense! These tools are engineered and certified to meet OSHA and other safety requirements, and a lot of testing and engineering go into their manufacture.
At Texas Metal Works, we needed some spreader bars for use with lifting magnets to move the heavy materials we use, so we developed our own. We’ve been using our design for years, and we’re making it available to the WeldProjects community now as well.

Build Components
Our 48 inch spreader bar is designed to offer protection against weld failure by using a laser cut plate inside a laser cut tube. There is a large loop designed to accommodate a lifting hook, which slides into a slot in the bottom of the laser cut tube. The plate physically can not pass through the top of the tube, and the combination of the two is very strong when fully welded.

Two pieces are designed to slip over the tube and be welded near the end to serve as stands, and also additional lifting points. While two bars can be bolted into any of the holes in the tubing to be used as hangers.
The flat pieces are all laser cut from 3/8″ A572-50 steel, and the tubing is standard 11ga steel.
